Greenslade (UK)Bedside Manners are Extra (1973)Genres: rock, pop, progressive pop, progressive rock, pomp rockGreenslade consisted of leader Dave Greenslade, Andy McCulloch, Dave Lawson and Tony Reeves. They originated from groups like Colosseum, King Crimson and Web/Samurai. The instrumentation was bass, drums and dual keyboards with vocals used sparsely.
This is not my cup of tea I must confess. The first song sounds like some sort of proto AOR and I don’t like the vocals on any of the songs, I don’t really like the bass work or the drum sound and the keyboards are a real drawback, they only work occasionally. The album sounds like a cross between Supertramp and something like Dragon or similar and that blend doesn’t mix well in this case. The only songs that work to some degree are “Pilgrims Progress”, “Time to Dream” and “Sunkissed You’re Not” but, again, they only work then and then, not all the way through. “Drum Folk” starts off really good, then turns into a pointless jamming thing complete with – yes it’s true – an in-the-studio-standard-drum-solo.
I can’t get over that drum sound, it’s so…cheesy. Not my cup of tea but for whom is it then? Well, since the overall sound is so dreadful and thin like a stale soup I don’t think it will appeal to anyone. Maybe to fans of Greenslade if this is how they sound on other albums as well. For myself: this pot of tea goes right down the sink.
