Out of Focus Wake UpOut of Focus (Germany)Wake Up (1970)Genres: kraut rock, psychedelic rock, proto prog

review by thomas

It seems to me that this is a band who are trying to be very anglosaxian in their sound, this also means that they sing in English, and quite good too. Now this is their second album (or is it their first? I’m not really sure) and if they haven’t developed a style of their own that’s quite understandable. The group has a line-up of bass, guitar, vocal, drums, keyboards and flute. They often play an organ based psychedelic rock or sometimes more in the way of proto-prog. In other words Kraut rock.

The songs are long, rather straightforward and hard rocking. Nevertheless “Wake Up” makes a good impression. It’s in the vein of early UK bands, like Jericho or Bodkin, only Out of Focus incorporates a minor jazzy fee-form playing on many of their songs; making ‘em also very close in sound to the fellow Germans in Ikarus, though a bit harder and darker. In their instrumental passages hints of Deep Purple can be traced.

Not bad at all, enjoyable and interesting. None of the six songs stands out in any way – good or bad – from each other. A solid and even album.
