review by thomas

”Passio Secundum Mattheum” was the first album by the Italian trio Latte e Miele and they choose to make it a concept album based on the gospel according to Matthew. The sound is way bigger than what you could suspect from a trio, they have a full choir to help them create a theatrical, operatic feel to the music and each of the group members also play more than one instrument. Their base is the standard trio base: a drummer, a keyboardist and a bass/guitar/singer member but they also handle flute and electric violin. They manage to create a sound full of feelings and staggering performances in the classic Italian vein, very symphonic and classical sounding. There’s a percussion driven section in the middle of the album that drags on more than I would have wanted it to, but apart from that there are no major flaws on this album. The album still somehow fails to make a more striking image with me. It is a very good album no doubt about that; wonderfully played and produced, yet something seems to be missing. It can be that this album just ain’t got enough hooks and memorable parts, for the truth is that no matter how many times I have listened to this album I never quite remember anything from it more than odds and sods. And that is the reason I think that this album never fully click with me, but a good record nevertheless…give it a chance, you may very well like it a lot.
