Omega Omega 5

Omega 5 (1973)

Genres: progressive rock, hard rock

review by thomas

Omega plays a kind of progressive rock that relies heavily on the keyboards and the guitar. Side B is declared an “szvit” and here they have some aid from an orchestra. They sing in Hungarian which seems to be a very “singing friendly” language judging from this album. The keyboards are especially good, with tasteful organ work and even some Moog.

The band played the rock/hard rock kind of progressive rock that some will say isn’t really progressive and others will say that it is. Either way it’s good music and underrated by myself since I after a few listenings put it away in the oblivion box. Now I have re-discovered it. But don’t get me wrong; it’s not a classic or fantastic album but a good, enjoyable one. It features some really nice riffs along with strong melodies. Sometimes the drums sound really flattened and then sometimes – to my surprise – they are just great. On some songs the guitar is the lead instrument, on others it’s the organ – which I prefer. At times they remind me of Modry Efekt.
