If this was the soundtrack to “The Sting” that would have been the scariest movie ever made. This is dark and brooding chamber music that is genuinely disturbing, as opposed to disturbing in a “please scare me” fashion. The instruments in use are oboe, bassoon, percussion, violin, bass, guitar, piano, organ and harmonium. The music actually reminds me of the French band Pulsar, perhaps due to the slow pace and the focus on atmosphere, but while Pulsar occasionally borders on the nightmarish, Univers Zero never borders on anything outside it. At least not on this release. So it is dark, innovative and uncompromising, but is it good? Even though I like dark music I often find this album too relentless to listen to in its entirety. When you feel like listening to really dark and disturbing music (that usually happens after hearing music that claims to be dark and gothic, but still fits nicely between commercials on MTV), this is it. If you don’t (and you usually don’t, do you?) this is not the album to listen to.
